2. Navigating the Site

Where Is the Main Content?

On each page, the main content is in the middle.

If the main content is divided into several sections, a clickable table of contents appears above and below the text.

If the main content includes links, they lead to information directly relevant to taking action.

What Do the Links on the Left and Right Do?

The links at left and right vary by page and provide:

  • Orientation within the site (left-hand navigation).

This includes "bread crumbs" (>Home >Next Page >Next Page) for navigation within a topic, as well as short-cuts to other topics.

  • Further information related to the main content (right-hand navigation).

This can include background articles, references, and so forth.

What Do the Links at the Top and Bottom Do?

The links at the very top and bottom are the same on all pages and lead to:

  • Home:

The entry page to the site, with the menu of topics.

  • Terms of Use:

The agreement you are accepting by using the Web site and the posted products.

  • Catalog (coming soon):

The list of all products with descriptions and order buttons.

  • Site Map:

A hierarchical layout of the entire site.

  • Help:

This page, with answers to common questions.

  • About Us:

Information about the company behind the site.

  • Contact Us:

Email addresses, phone numbers, etc., to get in touch with the company.

3. Printing Pages

How Should I Print Web Pages?

If you want to see the full page, including the links on the right, print in Landscape mode.

If the links on the left and the content in the middle are sufficient, print in Portrait mode.

You can choose between print modes in your browser's Page Set-Up window. See the browser's help for more information.

4. Choosing Browsers

Which Browser Should I Use?

This Web site has been tested with the products from Microsoft (Internet Explorer and MSN Explorer), Netscape, and Mozilla.

We recommend to always use the newest version of each browser, to take advantage of the latest security features.

5. Ordering, Paying for, and Receiving Products

How Do I Obtain the Products Listed on the Site?

You can order products wherever they are listed, be it in a page's main content, in a page's right-hand navigation, or in the Catalog (coming soon).

You can initiate the order for one product at a time through "Buy Now" buttons or for several together through the shopping cart buttons (coming soon): "Add to Cart", "View Cart", and "Check Out".

How Much Do I Have to Pay?

If there is a charge, the amount you pay depends on the number of people with whom you will share the product. The ordering process will ask you to provide this information. You can also read about the different levels in the Copyright section of the Terms of Use.

Here are a few examples of not so obvious cases, to help you choose the level at which to purchase and whether to seek a special licensing agreement.

  • Suppose I purchase a document at level 2 and post it on an intranet accessible to 100 people, is that legal?

YES. You must, however, ensure that all are aware of the rules explained here for accessing and using the document.

  • Suppose a free or purchased document inspires me to create a new document that is substantially different and I publish the result (for free or for purchase), is that legal?

YES. What constitutes a "substantially different" document is governed by the concept of "fair use." You can quote, parody, or use our document in other ways as long as you reveal only a small part of it. The laws expect people to apply good judgment and be "fair" to the original authors.

  • Suppose I purchase software at level 1 and include it with minor modifications in a piece of software that I make available for free on the Internet, is that legal?

NO. You are making our software, from which you have copied beyond "fair use", accessible and usable to someone other than yourself. You need to purchase at level 4.

  • Suppose I purchase a document at level 3 and sell it as part of a package I put together, is that legal?

NO. You are making money with our document. You must license it for commercial use first.

How Do I Pay for Products?

If there is a charge for the products, the order process will ask you how many rights you need (based on the number of people with whom you want to share the products).

You can pay by PayPal, either by PayPal account or by major credit card. Both ways of paying by PayPal are conducted under secure Internet protocols.

PayPal accounts are free of charge and store your payment information so that you don't have to type it again for a future transaction (at this site, at eBay, or any other PayPal-enabled site). PayPal can create a new account in a couple of minutes.

There is a $2000 payment limitation for new PayPal accounts, because new accounts are by default "non-verified," as PayPal calls them. Verifying a PayPal account to remove the limitation involves a few steps between your bank and PayPal. Therefore, if you need to make a purchase of more than $2000 immediately and you do not have a verified PayPal account, you must use a credit card.

How Do I Receive Products?

Products are downloaded by email delivery. The order process will ask you to specify the desired address.

To simplify the security checks, it is preferable to give the email address associated with your payment method (PayPal account or credit card). This reduces the risk of unauthorized persons paying with someone else's money while obtaining products at their email address. (For the same reason, brick-and-mortar merchants prefer to ship to your billing address.)

Each product is emailed in a separate message, to avoid the size limitations for attachments that ISP's may impose. The order process will tell you how big each emailed file will be.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

We keep records for each step from order to delivery (for paying products). We can therefore trace the status of each transaction and, if necessary, confirm that you paid for an order but did not receive the products. Please contact us if this happens.

You can help prevent and resolve problems in two ways:

  • By ensuring that the email address and payment information you provide is correct.
  • By noting the confirmation id which will be displayed for your order on the screen.

Note that the contents of the shopping cart does not disappear until an order is placed. If a problem occurs before the order is initiated, the shopping cart will still contain the products you selected. You can simply start over with the check-out process. (The shopping cart does, however, have an expiration time, so don't wait too long.)

6. Security and Privacy

To read the applicable policies, please see the Terms of Use.

From a technical and procedural perspective, key safeguards are:

  • All personal information is encrypted for transmission over the Internet. Note the //https: prefix for all pages during the order, payment, and delivery process.
  • The only information stored on your computer ("cookie") is your shopping cart (coming soon), which contains the identifiers of the products you selected.
  • Information stored on our computers is protected by passwords and treated as need-to-know, both in terms of what is recorded and who can see it.
  • We will never initiate a communication (email, postal mail, or phone) that requests personal information from you.

If you ever notice a difference between what is described here and what actually happens, please be cautious (e.g., verify that you are at our Web site by opening a new browser window and typing in the URL from scratch) and contact us.
